Hi everyone. I am new to this site. I am a bass player and just started the banjo a couple of years ago. Looking forward to learning lots!

Welcome to the hangout! Do you play upright or electric bass, or both?

Electric bass has been (and will always be) my principle instrument too, and I was planning on investing in a quality upright bass (I took a semester of lessons on upright in college), but then banjo bug bit me after hearing Steve Martin's The Crow album, and the infection got the better of me. In 2018 and I dropped the upright plans, and have been keeping the focus almost exclusively on banjo.

Cooking - sounds about right. After all someone said a banjo looks like it's designed by a tractor engineer and made in a saucepan factory.

Hi Bobby. I started with the cello but didn't like it much. My friends in high school encouraged me to start playing bass guitar and I never looked back. Around two years ago I started on the banjo - I always wanted to learn and loved Steve Martin. Also I was a big fan of Victor Borge as a kid, too. Eventually  I would like to mix comedy with my banjo playing.

I play funny now but not in the way that I want.

>> My friends in high school encouraged me to start playing bass guitar

Same thing for me. I started on guitar, and the next day called my best friend (who also paled guitar) and said "I got a guitar! Let's form a band!" He then said, "Cool, Let's do it. But you should play the bass... everyone play the guitar, but no-one plays the bass."

6 months later I bought my first bass, and for the rest of high school and my first year of college (before I transferred to a music school) I was one of only 3 bass players in the school, and in 4 different bands at any given time.

What's amazing, is after learning to play the banjo, I now apply some bass techniques to my banjo playing, and vice versa.

Yeah me too! I took one of Matt Brandt's banjo courses on Truefire and he mentions a banjo player should think like a bass player.
