Not sure, but didn’t he have to borrow a banjo to play on one of those sessions on the west coast?

I don't know if JD used the same banjo on every recording session, but for the very first album, he used Richard Kelsdens (owner of Saga) prewar Gibson RB-75. JD is holding the banjo in the photo on the front of that album cover. Incidentally, Kelsdens RB-75 was the banjo used to pattern the early Goldstar banjos.
