I noticed an eBay auction offering a “gentleman’s scale” ESS. I know I’m a newbiE and have only been at it 45 years but what is a “gentleman’s scale?”

Sounds fishy to me. So far as I know, Gibson has always used the 26 1/4" scale on their 5 strings, except perhaps on a few of their very earliest [pre 1924] banjos.

I emailed the seller. apparently she googled "banjo sizes" and it listed a "Gentleman's banjo" Another case of an uneducated seller using the interwebs for research. she apologized for her mistake.

Argh. I wonder where that came from?
That's the joy of the internet. New misinformation being manufactured thousands of times an hour . . . to confuse us all.

The term "ladies banjo" was indeed in use about 120 years ago.

Oh well . . .

From what I've been able to infer from people who knew Earl Scruggs, he was indeed a gentleman, in the best sense of the word.

I seem to recall some statement about a gentleman being a fellow who knows how to play the banjo, but declines to do so.

I do not AGREE with that statement; I merely report having seen it.

I believe Mark Twain said that.

Hmmm...so never admit you’re a RB-175.

Perhaps it's muted...

Does playing a tenor banjo mean you have to play it 10 or 13 miles away?
