Someone just posted this on another site, and it's probably been posted on BHO before, but WOW!

Watched it last night. Things that struck me:

1. Formica finger boards! That’s what I call a speed neck.

2. Is the secret to clawhammer mastery in Coke and brown liquor?

3. I would have loved to hear these guys with modern recording equipment.

I watched it the other night too, but either my internet or the source internet was playing up a bit so I'll rewatch on Youtube. That's the only film footage I've ever seen of Fred apart from a very short clip that was kicking about last year. I noticed Fred has a very loose hand, and is quite 'wristy' in his right hand frail.

And, I was very surprised to see Fred C 2 finger picking rather than clawhammering when playing Ruebens Train.

I doubt that 2020 state-of-the-art gear could have produced a better audio track than that one.  Put on a decent pair of phones and listen to it-- even in mono, the sounds of the two instruments are clearly separate and precisely defined.

Such a Grand treat to see these two together in motion!! And compared to some of the field recordings i've heard of them together, they were really playing tight on this day. I've watched it twice thru in recent days and still feel excited to see it again!

Earlier I have heard about Fred playing with an almost open hand. This film really showed how i did it.

Thanks for a great 20 minutes, and as Jan said, a really good look at Fred's right hand.

Those seeking to emulate this sound today should take note of Cockerham's banjo set-up. There is zero "neck angle" on his banjo, and he's using an uncapped two-legged bridge.

Yes, but cocaine and white liquor works even better.
