My children exude a great deal of effort in "educating" their mother. Their latest was to introduce me to The HU!

Yes, I listened to the ten hour version. I have been indoctrinated. I now speak fluent Mongolian. I am ready to meet my destiny to rule the Universe! As soon as I overcome my fear of horses.

Anyway, this is the short five minute version. At 3:35, he slides his finger UNDER the strings. I was wondering the merit of this style of playing.

Notice there isn't a single female in the video. The reason men become musicians is to get the chicks. Maybe Mongolian women don't like music. Hu knows? They should cover this tune:

Fun to watch.
That strummed thing appears to have a membrane head, so, is counts on MY scorecard as a banjo.

If you want to chant along, here's one lyric that works for their beat:
Itsy Bitsy Spider WentUpDaSpout!
Itsy Bitsy Spider WentUpDaSpout!
Itsy Bitsy Spider WentUpDaSpout!

A few minutes' search seems to indicate that it's called a TOVSHUUR, and might be played plucked OR bowed.
But, the ones i see, don't have frets, like the one in the video.
Might be a mix of mongol tradition and Western musical scale.

On the bowed 2 stringed instrument, the strings are very high off the neck, so to get to the one closest to the player, they go under the string instead of over.

It must be a "guy thing", as I couldn't stand to listen to it more than a minute or two and I'd leave the room.
