I have ben looking into getting a skin head for my banjo. I have found the Balch site having E-mailed him with no response. In attempting to place an order it indicated that 4 weeks was the time for receiving. Is this normally how long this takes. Needless to say I am new at this. Thanks
John is a friend and I know that he is usually very quick to respond. He hasn't been on the Hangout as much lately as he used to be, but he has posted messages recently. Don't give up on him. I think you will get a response.
Several years ago I bought a top grade pure white calfskin head from John for my old Mastertone. I don't remember waiting a month. He said he did have to delay just a little bit to find a "select" pure white calfskin for me. I don't know if a standard 11" head is quicker to supply than perhaps another diameter. But I can tell you I was 100% satisfied.
Emails have a terrific tendency to end up in "Junk" files, if you're emailing someone for the very first time.
John builds the heads to order, so it is custom made to your banjo. When I ordered mine he ran into a problem while shrinking the head and had to start over with a fresh skin. He is very meticulous, and the delay could be because he has a lot of orders to fill. I would try emailing him again, emails do get lost.
I bought a skin head from John this year. I'm pretty sure I bought it thru his web site. It did take somewhere around 3-4 weeks but I was completely satisfied. I didn't try to email him thru the web site but he emailed me after placing my order.
On August 23rd I placed an order on line for an 11 inch 4 star goatskin head. I received the head, by USPS as I recall, on September 12th. Everyday I'm liking the sound of my banjo even more than the day before. I think that's because I'm slowly but steadily increasing the tension.
Balsam Banjo Works, the parts supply branch of Pisgah Banjos sells pre-stretched Balch banjo heads, you can check them out.
I am not affiliated, just a fan!
John has been battling some health issues. He wouldn’t intentionally ignore or hurt anyone’s feelings. He’s a fine man. Please be patient, I’m sure he’s just not feeling well or something. brett.
