Does anyone have a Tab for Needed Time for banjo? I'd prefer bluegrass/3 finger, as I don't know how to do clawhammer.
Many thanks in advance.
Hi johnliner - Can you post a Youtube video or two of recordings of this song that you like?

If that's the tune, my ear (as lousy as it is) hears 2 things. The banjo in the in the forefront sounds like it is played with a pick (maybe just strummed though), with a PO or HO now and then. Could be duplicated with pinches I guess. But in the background I hear another banjo playing what appears to me more of a melody.
Yes, that's it, sort of. That is Taj Mahal's fast version, clawhammered, from the Sounder album. there is also a slow version, also on the same album. Taj Mahal clawhammers his banjo tunes, which I cannot do. I believe it was Lightning Hopkins who first did this tune many years ago. Am wondering if anyone has written Tab for this song, either clawhammer of 3 finger style. I found a tab for Eric Bibb's version but it is for guitar. I put my banjo into an equivalent tuning for banjo but it does not sound right at all.
I've always loved this song; am trying to figure it out note for note from the Youtube video. Just wondered if anyone has ever done the tab. Even if it's for clawhammer I can "translate" it into 3 finger style.
Not the tab you are looking for and it's clawhammer but here' s a version by Mary Z Cox that I like a lot. I'm sure you could buy the tab book that goes with this CD from Mary, that would get you started.
This sounds to me like the same melody as the old spiritual Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, and there is at least one three finger style tab for that in the BHO tab library. Check it out.

Thanks very much, Don. You are right, Needed Time does indeed sound very much like this. I remember Leaning on the Everlasting Arms from the movie Night of the Hunter, starring a young Robert Mitchum as the bad guy. I'm going to try this out, see how close it is to Needed Time. I'm thinking this just might get me there.
