I'm having a custom neck made for a '26 style 2. It's going to have the right inlay but it's going to be a custom peghead with the coke bottle shape but with a tunneled 5th string.
Is it ethical to put Gibson in pearl in the peghead?
I don't think Gibson is even building banjos any more, isn't that right?
I know builders have been doing it for years, but is it truly the right thing to do?

I think with an original Gibson, it is perfectly acceptable to make a Gibson-branded reproduction neck. With a from-scratch parts banjo, no.

I agree.  A while back on BHO there was a banjo for sale.  It had an RK35 pot, with a new bowtie style neck on it that said Gibson.  I thought that was a bit shady.  The Recording King sticker was still on the inside of the pot, so it wasn't exactly a secret, but still...

You could have the maker put something on the unseen part of the heel to make it clear that it's not a real Gibson neck.

When I had Jimmy Cox convert my '29 tb-2 in '99 I wanted the peghead to say "Cox",but Jimmy said he had to put Gibson and Mastertone in the FE neck as per Gibson's orders.

I guess things are different,now.

I'm a big believer in what Ira said -- I want the neck builder to put his mark somewhere on that neck. Heel, truss rod cover, someplace... If for no other reason than to show pride in his work.

I agree it's perfectly fine to put "Gibson" on the peghead, for a Gibson pot.
