Hello everyone,

Could people point out to me female clawhammer players? I see plenty of women playing on instagram and youtube clawhammer pages but I'm ideally looking those have been released on bandcamp/ spotify.

I know (and like) Rhiannon Giddens, Nora Brown and Ol Belle Reed, but aren't familiar with many more.

Thanks in advance.

This list of artists is made up of female artists that may or may not be "frailers", but they're all amazing folk musicians: Anna and Elizabeth, Alison Degroot, Cousin Emmy (not a clawhammer player, but she's as old time as it gets), the Macrae Sisters, Jean Ritchie (not a banjo picker at all, but she's an encyclopedia of old time tunes), Coon Creek Girls, Uncle Earl, Erin Marshall. Alice Gerrard and Hazel Dickens are an amazing duo but I think they're a fiddle/guitar duo mostly. Very little banjo, but Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings have some of the most incredible original songs and interpretations of old folk songs, impeccable harmonies

My fav is Alison DeGroot with the Goodbye Girls or with The Molsky Mountain Drifters. Also, check out Gillian Welch's stuff.

Great suggestions - Cathy Fink put out a great solo album 'Banjo Haiku' a while back and definitely check out the recent Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdNm-YMQXfM  I saw them play in Norwich last year - they were brilliant.

Some other suggestions: Debra Clifford (The Farwells): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeZi3EyhLlk

Kendl Winter (solo, The Lowest Pair): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCb5GwJmbck

Mary Z Cox (solo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luAfPHlew94

Mama's Broke (think the banjo player's name is Amy Lou): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOgvHA9Z0RE

Women playing clawhammer banjo is nothing new. Maybelle Carter could frail a banjo, though I don't know of any recorded examples of her banjo playing. And I believe that Samantha Bumgarner also played clawhammer style.

Laurel Premo. Under the band name Red Tail Ring. Put out several albums. Also played in a contra band called Bowhunter, on fiddle.

She does probably my favorite version of Pretty Polly.

She can sing and play fiddle quite well, doing my favorite version of The Blackest Crow.

I think some folks would be surprised at how much great traditional old time and bluegrass music exists in the woods of Michigan.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Hedy West. She was well known during the 1950's-60's folk revival. If you listen to some of her recordings while she's playing the banjo, you can actually hear her thumb hitting the head while she's playing.

I didn't mention her, because I was not sure if she was really frailing (clawhammer). I got the impression her playing was up-picking, what many call "Seeger-style"…
