C-19 has raised a lot of ire in people, but it seems to have raised the stupidity level too. I see many instances of what can only be described as Selfish, or Rude, but it could be Ignorance, or worse yet stupidity.

Driving down the highway the other day you could clearly see up ahead that everyone was pulling into the right lane, so I and several others also pulled over before we got to the line of traffic. A few yards later we passed the construction signs stating the left lane was closed, meanwhile several cars passed me in the left lane, but started merging right after the construction signs. Meanwhile, other cars kept speeding down the left lane. Even at the point where the cones started blocking the left lane, forcing the merge, 2 cars - both SUVs - tried to beat the cone forced merge to get into the line in front of me. I, illegally, straddled the dashed line so they could not get further and were forced behind me, one behind the car that was behind me. Why do these people think they are special and should move to the front of the line? I've been in these situations in the past and watch trailer trucks block the lanes so people have to merge. I applaud them for doing this.

I fear that C-19 isolation will create more rudeness as human to human interactions become fewer.

Not just cuz of covid19, Dave. That’s been going on, as you probably know, for years,,,truckers get on the CB telling drivers to straddle both lanes way back before the lane closure to keep “eager beavers” from jumping to the front of the line.

My layman's noggin' says that population density is likely a factor.   In our relatively rural area of a province with relatively low infection rates, I haven't noticed any increased rudeness/selfishness/stupidity. I seem to detect people generally having a resigned acceptance of businesses [ostensibly following provincial guidelines] trying to out-do each other in the precautionary (?) measures they follow.

Oh I know, it's been going on for as long as I've been driving, which means it's been going on for a lot longer.  I've been in heavy traffic where I've been caught in the move over lane, but try to merge as soon as I can, not keep jumping ahead.  In this particular case it was light traffic, and you could see for at least 1/4 mile that everyone was pulling over and the left lane was empty but a long line in the right lane.

Years ago someone on Usenet suggested that all cars be equipped with a dart gun device where you could shoot rubber tipped darts at idiot drivers.  When a cop pulled over a car with 20 or so darts stuck to it they would get a ticket for being an a hole.  A counting device would also slightly penalize you for firing the dart to prevent abuse.  I kind of liked that idea, but there have been days when I'd run out of ammo real quick.

When was the last time you saw the BATMOBILE doing no more than the posted speed limit?

Everybody is the Hero of the mini-series running inside their own brain.
So, because their goals are Heroic, they are ENTITLED to push their way ahead of all us mere peasants.

Back when I was in High School, my older sister was diving the family vehicle.
and as we headed east, AWAY from the small cluster of businesses which constituted the heart of our tiny burg, here comes our neighbor, Dick, running at top speed TOWARD downtown.
Somebody wondered, aloud, what his hurry might be.

Ever the master storyteller, sister Christine conjectured that MAYBE he was running to the store, to get his mother a roll of toilet paper, since the poor woman might otherwise be a prisoner of circumstance.

Ever since then, I try to excuse people who are endangering other people's lives by driving fast and foolish, by reminding myself of the POSSIBILITY (however remote) that they are just in a hurry to get their mother a roll of toilet paper.

Oh, I still curse them as if they were deliberately CHOOSING to behave like motorized hemorrhoids, but I don't get ANGRY enough to affect MY driving.

I will do my best to keep those rude aholes from getting in front of me. I will gladly give space to people who need to get over but not those people.
It has been happening forever.

Were they driving BMW's Dave? That's usually the case over here. maybe twice in my life I have gone through a motorway lane restriction like that at cruising speed, purely because everyone did what they were meant to do and get in lane well in advance. Throw a couple of numpties into the equation who think the rules don't apply to them and everything grinds to a halt.

Last year I was helping deal with a very ill lady who was in a very busy/crowded beauty spot that gets jammed with cars, i wont bore you with the details but the paramedics asked us to bring their ambulance from where it was parked to the ladies position. Even with lights and sirens it took over 15 minutes to travel less than a mile because people felt that their finding a parking space on the road side was more important than moving for an ambulance. for some people the rules just don't apply to them.

this was the same spot last week

Jonty, that reminds me of another traffic pet peeve. Ambulance coming from behind, so the line of cars pulls over to let it by, and the last guy in line jumps in as soon as the Ambulance goes by to better his position in line and get ahead of everyone else who pulled over.

is it an illegal maneuver ? if not then use both lanes until you can safely move over to keep the traffic flowing.
The people blocking the lanes or stopping cars from entering at any point into driving lane are the real danger and should get a penalty.
One day you may block the wrong person and pay with your life so just slow down, keep your distance and safely get to your destination instead of hospital

when you pass a line of cars sitting still in line running 60 or 70 to squeeze in ahead of them it going to cause dangerous conditions,,, and i can name about 5 different makes of cars they usually are too. and they all cost over 50 K

Dave .... welcome to the world of people who spend an inordinate amount of time on the interstates highways!  I absolutely despise those drivers who totally ignore the "Lane Closed" signs and continue on until they run into traffic or have to get over.  Someone on here posted a year or two ago that a study showed that traffic moved just as fast (or faster) if cars use both lanes right up to where you have to get into one lane.  I doubted that was true, but it was supposedly based on research ...... but  ......... I know the people getting into the faster lane are not doing it to speed up traffic getting through.  They are doing it to get where they are going first and to heck with you suckers that have pulled over when you saw the sign.  I love the truckers that block the lane and will ALWAYS let them in front of me.  Also I'm not an a$$ about letting the idiots in who did not obey the sign, but they sure don't know what I am thinking about them ...... and probably don't care!

Whenever I drive through the Portland, OR, area with a 22 foot travel trailer I typically end up in a wrong lane because I don’t know any better. Driving through Portland traffic for this yokel is kind of a near death experience. I’m always amazed at the number of nice people who allow me into their lane. I can’t explain it. Maybe they’re thinking: “Welcome to hell. We’re all in this mess together.”

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it must be about me. I was surprised to find that it is not.
Apparently, you are not from Florida. This is an every day occurrence here and has nothing to do with any virus or being couped up.  This is the main reason traffic bottlenecks when this occurs. BTW, I have straddled the line as well and the person behind me always keeps my space open
Some are courteous, but not most of them here in FL.
Thanks,
JFLIcks

Begin merging as soon as you safely can once you are notified of the lane closure, everyone keeps moving at a slightly slower pace, but no one needs to stop.  If you use both lanes until the last point everyone stops to allow the merging and you start aggressive driving behavior that is not good for anyone.  You have at least 1/4 mile to merge after the notification, you should not drive past the line of people who have already merged to jump the line.  Not polite, and not safe and does not keep the flow of traffic moving.

I grew up in a rude, selfish, ignorant environment with few examples of human decentcy. From my standpoint, things have stayed about the same. The only thing I can do about it is try my best to be kind.

Does/should "zipper merge" apply in such instances?

The man I married believes all merging should be on a "yield" basis. As in, all other vehicles should yield to him. There is a reason I will no longer get in a car with him at the wheel.
