I find I am a better backup banjo player than a lead player. I just roll through the chords in various was to complement the tune. With lead I have to really know the song. I seem to be able to wing it more with backup. Nobody seem to be looking for backup banjo players but I have a ball playing.

Same.  If I know the chord progression, it easy to do some interesting backup(rolls/licks/up&down the neck).  Picking out the melody is harder for me, unless it's a song I have known my whole life.
