This is nothing short of excellent.

Best of luck with this most worthwhile endeavor.

Great initiative.

Now, no disrespect intended - just want to have a conversation - but why limit your horizons to the southeast or ties to the southeast?

How about older Left-Coast grandchildren called to the music of their illiterate but soulful Rockingham County, NC tenant-farmer forbears?

Since you've popped in, is there no way on Patreon to pay a year's support in one swoop? For those of us who might like to sign on with your adventures but don't want some online company messing around with our card every month?

Clifton, this is a good thing you are doing. Hope it's a fruitful effort for you and the young folks.

Btw, a Google search of your name finds your patreon site easily. But a search on the patreon site itself won't find your page. I tried searching by your name and also searching " banjo heritage". No big deal, just a heads up in case you were not aware of it.

I think this is wonderful. I'm a northern boy but I think I see the idea behind the restrictions.

Perhaps Clifton is looking for a mentee? Someone to be part of the southern folk music tradition as a whole, not just someone to teach how to play banjo. Part of the banjo heritage is just that, the heritage. While recent generations of my family are from Michigan, we originally come from SE Pennsylvania. I don't see anything wrong with trying to preserve oral and musical traditions that within the community from which they came.

Also, right now it's online, but being geographically close means that in the future they could meet up regularly and talk. Someone from Wisconsin or California won't be able to do that.

Thanks for doing this Clifton. I think it's awesome

People can "pledge" as much as they want via Patreon, then when they're billed at the end of the month they can cancel their subscription. However, most folks who want to make one-time donations do so via the PayPal link I put in my video descriptions on Youtube.

People are also welcome to send donations via mail to: Clifton Hicks, PO Box 994, Copperhill TN 37317.

Thanks. - Clif

Thanks for watching my back, Hugh! Several people have alerted me to this issue--some even submitted complaints to Patreon, which I very much appreciate. I've been dealing with Patreon Support for a week now trying to get it resolved. Apparently, it's just a glitch (nothing nefarious) and their software engineers just haven't fixed it yet.

Thanks again. - Clif

Don't worry! I'm not strictly adhering to that criteria--it's merely an offer. For example, one student I've scheduled for next week is a 15-year-old guitarist in Maine with no significant ties to the South.

That being said, I am and will continue focusing this project toward empowering young Southerners, a demographic which has been marginalized by mainstream "Old-Time" music.

I did already send a one-off Paypal donation. As a thank-you for that wild, raw and lyrical 2 hours and 19 minutes that went up on the 'tube the other night.   devil

But that did not get me access to material behind the Patreon wall.  I'm willing to pay up on Patreon but I don't wish to have them messing with my card on an installment basis.    I'm pretty sure if you "cancel your subscription at the end of the month," access is again blocked, no?  I just want to pay for 12 months of access in advance.      But I don't see Patreon making that possible for me.

Yeah, they won't let you do that. Patreon wants to string you along and they don't give creators any leeway as far as letting people behind the paywall without an active subscription. These people are surprisingly draconian for an allegedly "woke" outfit. If you'll email me directly I can at least send you all the tabs I've created so far, in gratitude for your donation. Don't know if you even use tabs, but that's one thing I can do in return. - Clif

Clifton:

I certainly appreciate you being on Patreon and your lessons with tabs. Really excellent content.

Patreon is a double edged sword. They insist on doing things their way. In return, they provide you and other content creators with an opportunity to supplement their monthly income.

There aren't many places for musical creators to do for a paying audience online.

"Patreon is suprisingly draconian for a "woke" outfit."

You may not have noticed Clifton.......all "woke" are draconian.

It's princely of you to offer the tabs, Mr. H, and I'll take you up on it if I decide to pay a year (or two) equivalent in one swoop on Patreon and then "unsubscribe." I'm currently wrestling with reluctantly signing up for the incremental approach as I see you have a helluva lot of stuff on there.  Haven't decided which way to jump yet.

Hoping you get a nice crop of weens for the idea in your original post.

Sign up for Clifton's Patreon site.

A LOT of information and teaching for almost nothing.

A very good investment.

"Which way to jump" depends on your current abilities/skill level. If you already know how to play, and are just looking for new material & ideas, I'd start with my Traditional Banjo Lessons Playlist.

If you're completely new to the banjo, then I'd recommend starting with these specific lessons:

Intro to Old-Time Overhand/Clawhammer Banjo for the Complete Beginner

Intro to Old-Time 2-Finger Banjo for the Complete Beginner

I know how to play and can learn tunes from your very generous playlist. There may also be some Patreon adventures in the offing, we'll see.
