I love the sound Hubby Jenkins is getting out of this banjo.  It sounds like a steel strung minstrel.  Anybody know what it is?

Looks like a modern openback, with no tone ring or maybe a brass rod. Probably by an independent maker. Skin head. Nothing visibly unique about the banjo; the sound is a function of the head/head tension, strings (steel), bridge, and of course, the player.

On July 22nd he played a concert in his home on a facebook page called "Quarantine Happy Hour". FB won't let you share it as a link. But, it's still posted. The show's about an hour, and he's using that banjo. I looked in the comments, but no one asked him what the banjo model was. Seems like he's the type of person who'd write you back if you messaged him on fb...cheers

I can't identify it but the pot looks pretty similar to a Vega No 2 Special that I had. It could be a conversion with a newer neck.

that pot looks a bit big to me, not sure how big the player is but, the bridge is quite near the centre , sure looks quite new as well or, in very good condition. I am looking right now at my own Fairbanks Vega #2 special, it has a smaller pot than usual at 10 3/4 " and the faux tortoise shell band is noticeable from across the room. I think we are looking at a newer banjo here .

Nick - after looking at the video again I think you are correct.  That pot looks too big for the No 2 Special.  What I thought was the visible tortoise shell binding is probably just an ebony cap.  Guess my old man eyes are getting the best of me.  Thanks for correcting me.
