My first banjo will land here Tues.

Mark has been great. Photos during the build, an audio clip during his set up check asking if I wanted a brighter tone when it's played over the head versus the scoop (I told him it sounded great as is), as well as a final video to hear it before shipping. Great communication start to finish. I'm really feeling good about my choice and haven't even got it yet.

My only request on the build was no spikes and to add an armrest.

There are a few changes in the specs and design than listed on his site for a Standard Frailer model. Mark explained the changes and why. I'm fine with all of them and they are actually upgrades imo.

Until it arrives, you can see it on Mark's Facebook page, titled "Standard Frailer Reimagined"

I'll post more photos and such after it arrives. If I can put it down long enough to do so !

Hello,

Very nice. The appointments look like a good keeper. Post some video or audio to showcase its voice.

Thanks John, I'll have to spend a little time with it before I record anything, being new to the banjo. I've played guitar enough that it should come fairly quick though.

I'll certainly be able to spend as much time as I like with it now that I'm retired.

Hi Ken, I'm confident I made a good choice. So many builders out there to choose from. Mark was the first one called and after our conversation I saw no need to look elsewhere.

It came yesterday as promised by UPS and it's very nice. It survived shipping very well. The bridge was still in place and intonation is fine.

After some time with it I decided to try some medium strings. I like them.

I also have found I like playing...well practicing at this point..... much better than sitting.

Anyhow, here are some phone camera shots. It's a beautiful instrument and it deserves better but that's all I have right now.

Well, it won't let me post my other photos... I'll see if I can find my camera cable.

I am interested in your thoughts on this banjo, particularly the neck, feel/finish etc, I spoke to Mark a while back about a Vega neck for my old Tubaphone, he ships worldwide ! so far this year things have not panned out well for us musicians but, hopefully soon the project will be back on .

Those standard frailers look like great banjos. I really appreciate all the innovation and research that went into them and am glad to see people ordering them.

Hi Nick, mine is my first instrument with a tru oil finish. I'm not sure how many coats he put on it but it looks great. Initially I thought it felt a little sticky or grabby but after my third day with it I don't notice it.

The neck profile is comfortable. I have been playing guitar for decades and I like fat necks on them. I've never held a guitar with a neck I thought was too beefy. So it's really hard for me to give an informed opinion on a banjo neck, but it feels fine. I'm sure Mark can make one any a profile you specify.

Overall I am well pleased with it. I just need to spend some time in the woodshed and learn to play it.

Hi Mark, I'm happy with mine. Mine doesn't have all the same specs as the Standard Frailer listed on his site. Mine has an ebony fretboard instead of richlite, as well as ebony headstock overlay and has an ebony blackstrap. The neck is cherry, but is laminated with maple stripes. A whimsy of sorts. My only input was no spikes and adding an armrest.

Rounded the fretboard edges today. Not as a correction of Mark's work. I do it on all my instruments with no binding on the neck.

I moved the armrest towards the bridge. I'll give it a couple days and see how that works for me.

Still liking the medium strings, but next string change I'll go even heavier, but tuned down a whole step. I think it may suit my voice better.
