A friend of mine recently commissioned me to remove the tone ring and 3-ply rim from his Flinthill FHB-280A and replace them with a small diameter brass hoop and block rim. He told me he was going to throw the old rim and tone ring away, unless I wanted it, then he'd give it to me. I could care less about the rim, but the tone ring I hate to see thrown away. I'm decent at judging flathead rings, but not archtop rings. However, this archie does ring pretty daggum good when struck like a bell.
How much should I offer to pay him for this tone ring? I know he said he'd give it to me, but I would feel better having given him something. It's the no-hole archtop that comes in the Flinthill FHB-280. Thank you!
It sounds like he gave it to you. Take it and put it to good use. You did him a favor didn't you? Now do him another and take it off his hands.
Based on the $150-$175 going rate for RK flat head tone rings, I'd price Flinthill arch tops in the same range if I were selling one.
If I were buying, I'd try to get one for $100.
