Hey yall! Here is a new post I thought you might enjoy. It's open to the public, no subscription necessary for this post. It's one of my favorites from the ol' bag of tricks.

Good lesson, with a different take on using these shapes -- sixths.

What's different is you're using 1-3-5 backward roll, so it's a three-note pattern putting more syncopation into a first-string melody. More commonly taught, I think, is using these shapes in a 1-3-5-3 pattern, shifting position on the open 5th which makes the 3rd string note anticipate the chord change.

Not at all saying the 4-note pattern is better or 3-note pattern is wrong.  Far from it.  I think the 1-3-5-3 is probably easier to play (and count). 1-3-5-1-3-5 looks to be a bit challenging but sounds like it's worth the effort.

Thanks for sharing.

Yep, that is true! I go for this roll because I like how the added syncopation, along with the clearly defined first string melody note, kind of forces emphasis on the first string and results in DRIVE, which can be harder to achieve with the wider roll patterns. I like the wider roll patterns, too...but this one is my preference more often than not (:
