For those of you who have a calton, hoffee, or other case where the banjo fits perfectly snug -- what do you do with your strap?

Do you take it on and off every time you want to play, or is there some way of folding it up that allows it to fit?

I'm debating buying a Calton for my neckville, but it occurred to me that if I have to take the strap on and off every time I take it out to play, it's going to get old real quick.

Maybe folks don't use the Calton as the "home" for their banjo, but exclusively for travel and trips to gigs, etc?

Thanks!

I have a Lakota 2" cradle strap and there is room for it in the Calton case wrapped around the pot. If you have a stiffer strap it might be a problem though.

My Carlton, which is the design used before the company sold to new owners, has room between the neck rest and pot to slide the coiled up strap. Not sure about the newer models.

Thanks, for the quick replies!

I have a pretty thick/stiff Rusty Knuckles strap. I think it'll be difficult to fit around the pot.

Maybe I'll reach out to Calton directly and see what they say.

Hey AJLeonardi, funny you posted this because I use a banjo Calton case as a ‘home’ case and I have a pretty thick Buffalo Rusty Knuckles strap as well! When I first got it it was so stiff it was hardy bendable but I bent it once and wrapped it around the side and it’s gotten used to that bend now and fits so easily. It used to be quite hard but it fits perfectly now. I’ll attach a picture if that helps

What Mike said. I bring the strap edgewise up onto the flange, wrap it around the pot as much as possible and turn it back on itself.  I do this in different directions depending on which of two banjos is in the Calton at that time.

I can see where this would be difficult with straps that are wide, thick or stiff.

I have a Showcase leather strap that is about two inches wide, and it folds nicely inside my Calton case.  Below is a link to a photo on my BHO home page that shows the strap wrapped around the banjo pot inside the case.

Hello, AJLeonardi.  I have a Canadian Calton (so likely made 2000 to 2006?) and a flathead Ome with resonator.  I am using a Neotech Super Banjo Strap which does fit in the case with the banjo, even though it has a wide-ish neoprene shoulder pad.  I wrap the "tailpiece end," still attached, around the pot at the flange, then "feed" the shoulder pad under the neck into the space at the heel.  The "neck end" crosses over the fingerboard, but it all fits. ( I really did not want to detach the strap every time, either!)

Good luck!
