On this day in 2001 my father died. He headed an artillery unit that shot down German aircraft.

Kudos to your dad!

Since you are probably not a military weapon guy, I'll mention that the artillery piece you are showing is not a howitzer but a "gun" (or field gun).  Guns shoot a much flatter trajectory than a howitzer.  When I was in Viet Nam my compound was adjacent to a 155 MM Howitzer firing battery.  When they would aim their barrels directly over us everything on my shelves in my hootch would wind up on the floor it shook so bad.  I also enjoyed watching the 8" guns fire when I was just outside of DaNang, as you could literally see the projectiles leaving the barrel and follow them for a few seconds down range.

Here is a photo I took at night of the infantry battalion I supported shooting a 4.2" mortar and a 105MM howitzer that my platoon built the gun emplacement for.

My dad was 4-F because of a blown-out knee that was beyond the surgery of the day. So he spent the war working in gov’t plants, though his first job was teaching a prep class for what became the OSS. He finished the war as the personnel director for the St. Louis Army Ordinance Plant.

My dad was a lowly infantry man in Patton's army in 1944 and '45.
He did not want any of his children have to go to war.

Bob ..... there is no such thing as a low infantryman.  Your dad was just as much of a hero as Gen. Patton.  He was part of the greatest generation and in my mind there is no doubt about that.

My father was a navigator on a Halifax Bomber flying missions out of Yorkshire. He helped bomb the gun emplacements on the beaches ahead of the D-Day landings.
