This banjo has no makers name that I can find. It has 1867 stamped on the dowel stick.
Any ideas as to maker or historical context? I also wondered about the diamond theme decoration and what that it may have meant at the time it was made. It has a mahogany neck with thin oak veneer on the bottom half of the neck. The triangular, hat shaped inlay at the top of the peg head and the base of the neck appear to be maple. It has an all brass rim with 17 shield brackets and one star bracket. The tailpiece is likely an add on but very cool.
It has a very large and unusual wedge where the dowel and rim join and a screw in the heal of the neck which may allow for the dowel to be removed but I haven’t tried to remove it. The rim is 12” and the scale length with current bridge placement is 25”.

Graham--if you have a version of Photoshop Lite, or whatever the current version is called, you can change the format to Jpeg. I would imagine other photo editing software will do the same.

Graham--I was considering that banjo, myself, before getting distracted by several as yet unfulfilled (un-consummated?) banjo deals.
Glad ya got it!
