Reminds me of a story that happened many years ago.
I was a young assistant warden of a small minimum security prison. I was in my office talking to the chaplain when the phone rang. An inmate had received a letter that his wife was divorcing him and cutting him off of the children as well. He was so agitated that there was concern that he would harm himself.
Now, in prison you have only a few tools available. And when about all you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail. So the inmate was placed in the segregation unit on suicide watch. He was stripped naked and placed in a thin paper gown. No mattress to tear up to make a noose. There. That would improve the situation, wouldn't it?
The sergeant from the segregation unit called to tell me the inmate was crying and asked if someone could come over and talk with him. I told the chaplain to come with me.
Entering the cell I found a man in his forties, naked but for a yellow paper gown, lying on the bare concrete floor, sobbing.
I had a degree in the behavioral sciences and was a stellar student of prison training. I think I said something sensitive and caring like “S'matter Bub?”
Between the tears, face down, his head on his arms, he said, “She doesn't love me. No one loves me.”
We considered what he said and then the chaplain gave a knowing chuckle. “That's not true; God loves you.”
I shot a glance at the chaplain and almost blurted out, “Yea, but he ain't feelin' it!”
Since then that incident has become my benchmark, so to speak, about how far down in life a man can go to say that he has truly hit bottom. It isn't being in prison. It isn't being an age where there's more life behind you than in front of you. It isn't being naked on a concrete floor. It's when you can't think of a single person who loves you or gives a hoot about whether you live or die.
You're blessed Fig.
Rock bottom comes in many forms...
I would think that man's was a pretty...
Lack of Love...is a truly Scairy thought..

Told me a story once...
About a paichant.. in the ward...
She was convinced...that she could not be loved...
They found her body...after she had killed herself..
I have seen depressed folks..
Who had put thier faith in worldly things..the disappointments of their life was too great for them to concur...
Hard to see...n a very helpless feeling...when you do not have the power to pull them from it..
Yes I am blessed..
This flawed son of Adam appreciates his dear friends.
It wouldn't be much of a life without them.
