Fig, do you mean the argument of the "2 sides" we see on the news (?), or here on the BHO?   Lately I'm noticing an increase in the venom in the off-topic threads.  One "side"* seems to want to change the thinking of others; one "side"* seems to want to ridicule and belittle others into silence [i.e. if the other side gives up and disappears, then the argument has been won].

* = obviously a generalization, not a hard-and-fast, no-exceptions-allowed rule.      [.....or maybe I'm just willfully blind??  wink  ]

As for who the real racists are, I suppose it depends on the emphasis that one puts on "real."  I'm thinking that they're the ones that commit or have committed racist acts, ones that have tried to offer up deflection, red herrings and excuses for racist acts by others, and ones that give or have given silent consent [maybe this last group includes those who "if you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem."]   Did I leave anybody out?

Just curios Owen, what is being done to combat the racism that is relatively prevalent in Canada?  What are you DonC, Chuck, Paul, Brian, etc. doing to combat it?  For the record, I don't think any of you have a racist bone in your bodies, but many of us have been scolded because we don't agree with the methods or gotten behind remedies (although none have really been presented) that we don't think will have any effect on racism.

There will always be arguments over methodology--even among those with the same goal. If ends justify means, to what extent should those means go?

Trap wars have that 3rd party set-up.
The manipulator tells 2 guys that the other one is stealing his lobsters out of his traps.
As soon as one believes the story he cuts off 10 traps of the other's for retribution.

Then the manipulator tells the guy that's been cut who did it.
Then the cutter gets 20 traps cut off by the cuttee.
This escalates while the manipulator goes about his own business with less competition or to settle some kind of old score.

Different goals...some invented.

A lot of folks seem to favor their bad side.

Some feel obliged to strengthen theirs while others are interested in shaping their better side.

I've grown up in a great mix which included a lot of indigenous people.
Even now, my gardener is Cree, my housekeeper is Haida. No big deal to me.
I think my volunteer grocery shopper is from some place in SE Asia.
I respect them and I hope that they know it.

More and more, I see that Caucasian people like me are becoming the visible minority
in this part of Canada. My D2 at university was a minority student! My grandsons are minority students in their elementary school. I've ridden the SkyTrain in Vancouver to be the only white guy for 3 cars full of people. Just people to me.

Less than a year ago, I needed to sit in a large "waiting room". Clearly Caucasians in one place and Indigenous First Nations at the other end. I was told to sit with the FN people. My round face? I don't know but I was instantly aware of the environment.

Right, Fig. Like the old saying goes: "You can fool some of the people all of the time; all of the people some of the time; but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."
True colors get shown very quickly on this forum.
Like Forrest Gump used to say: "That's all I have to say about that."

Good answer Brian.  At some point  us white dudes may be the minority.  Fighting racism and prejudice starts one person at a time.  Being kind and treating everyone fairly is a great start.  Not making anything or everything about the color of a person's skin is a good step.  I remember a black football player talking about his former coach (who I won't mention).  He said " __________ is not a racist.  He hates everybody".  There are people like that, so I guess technically someone who treats everyone the same regardless of their skin color isn't a racist.  There are other good names for people like that.  We also need to keep in mind that there are people on both sides of the issue that profit nicely keeping the flame of racism burning.

Hi John.... earlier this p.m. I had spent a fair bit of time on a response, but  on reflection, and with my previously noted observations ^^^ re. "sides," I decided to "delete" rather than "post"     However, I will say that to my mind, the most important thing my wife and I have done is to raise our kids to be fair-minded, thinking beings... with generally pretty good b.s. filters.... hoping of course that that continues and expands with successive generations.   As for what's being done in Canada, I'll just say that I think having more than two political parties reduces the effects of the nutter fringe(s).

I don't like to think of myself as a quitter, but I think I'm running low on emotional energy. I guess the time has come for me to curtail my participation in threads where ridicule and put-downs are standard tactics.   We'll see how I fare with "How to grow tomatoes," and  "Russell beer store runs out of Rickard's Red."

Like I mentioned a while back , I grew up in a neighbourhood with Krauts, Wops, Polacks, Frogs, Limeys, and Dike-Hoppers. (!) Back in the nifty fifties that’s what many folks were called , but not to their face very often. Everyone got along - I was the token dike-hopper. Things have improved somewhat,,my kids don’t understand the prejudice against black or brown or yellow people. My ex and I raised them to get along with everyone, no matter what background or colour.
I don’t think adults that are prejudiced will change much, but educating the young kids is where it’s at when it comes to racism. I’ve heard a lot of racist talk on the CB when I was trucking,,, in the U.S. southeast against the blacks and up here against the East Indians (Sikhs) and Pakistanis. I cringe when I hear that crap,,hopefully as time goes on it will diminish.

Get the Hello away from the Americas. Go to Asia or Africa. Find out what it's like to be the minority. Fear for your life as the exception from a colonial past.
Experience discrimination. Influence your own thinking where Aunt Jemima was a goddess.
You ain't sugar on a stick no more.

Then we can discuss it.

I would no wait for the phone to ring .If I am one of the "you" being given a command and told I am not what ever sugar on a stick means.
I don't have the money to go there ,I don't have the money nor the guaranteed freedom to return .

You are certainly welcome to go on with your point though  ,I didn't quiet get it.

That's right Chuck! In my hometown we had a weird intersection where there was an old graveyard.

They called it the fruit belt. My brother re-named it Wop Hollow. There were concrete lions & Grecian urns.

Everybody had nice gardens. We all got along!

I can only speak for myself. That's hard enough. As I explained before racism is everywhere but its only when it's mixed with blind hatred or unfairness that it becomes a real problem. In the property behind here, the lot 2 doors away, and directly across the street there are a total of 3 families of Chinese. They are excellent neighbours. They are normally law abiding, respectful, and good stewards of their property . They seem to keep to themselves but so do we. We also have 2 of our best friends who are full blooded Japanese. Over the years I have sometimes felt jealous toward immigrants in general. They arrive here with nothing and often work like dogs and end up with a fortune in real estate or other investments. Their kids end up driving nicer cars than mine.[Grrr!] I was never that ambitions so as a result I'm not rolling in wealth. Orientals and Indo-Asians typically stick together as families. Nobody goes without and everybody gets a good education if they want it. If you want to find a doctor in this area don't count on him or her being white. Us Anglo-Europeans seem to keep to ourselves and our relatives seem less important. I'm human so I'm capable of hatred. I have hated some non-whites as well as a boat load of white people. I can honestly say I'm an equal opportunity hater.
