Combination of frailing, drop thumb, two finger, thumb lead and up picking + owt else.

Finding with my nylon strung fretted and fretted banjo's trying to play with combination of styles/techniques works well and gives more tone than straightforward clawhammer/down picking.

Clifton Hicks does a lot of this, as you can see on his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0fRKB_T-2yrNajqoz9VWAg

I don't think there's any need to be a purist as regards style or invent technical names for everything. As long as the rhythm's rock solid, pretty much anything works. As regards tone, I could never get good tone from clawhammer without wearing a pick, although some people do.

Check out the New Lost City Ramblers' repertoire. There's lots of banjo, but not as much clawhammer as you'd expect.

The same is true of 78-rpm recordings from the 1920s-30s, especially band recordings.

You beat me to it, Chris! Stringbands generally have used fingerpicked style banjo up until about the '70s.
