Just strung up my 1890s Lyon & Healy. What would a good string height be at the 12th fret be? I didn’t have a 1/2” bridge so I sanded a 5/8” bridge down to approximately 1/2”. My strings are about 4 to 5/16” off the fretboard which seems high to me.

Up to 1/4" at the 12th fret was not uncommon. Some of mine are 3/16" and don't buzz. Anything lower and you run into trouble with the third and 4th strings buzzing.

If by "nylon" you mean the polyester "nylgut" you might need higher action as the strings are much thicker than the period correct strings.

Thanks Joel, they are Aquila Classic Banjo Nylgut strings. Sounds like I’ll be okay especially after I get a true 1/2” bridge. Been planning on ordering one from you but the banjo has not been a high priority for me.
