I just bought the old lyre-peghead minstrel banjo that James Krewson mentioned a few months ago.
the original (archived) thread is:

He put a skin head and strings on it. Here is a photo he just sent me. I have not received the instrument yet:

I loved that one when I first saw it.

Beautiful.

Congrats and enjoy!

Believe it or not, I am getting more and more picky, so not buying as much as I used to.

You are just plain lucky. And the more you spend the luckier you get.
I don't know where it could find a better home. Good work.

I put the bridge to where it is a 23 inch scale, and tuned it low, to dADF#A. It has a really deep, resonant sound!
This banjo has seen a lot of repairs and alterations over the years. Every other shield bracket and hook is missing. There are several screws going thru the pot into the heel, and several small nails on the outside of the heel, holding the neck in place. Plus the very home-made looking metal brace from the rimstick to the heel.
Can't tell if the frets are original to the banjo or not.
And the usual dents and dings in an instrument this old.
It's a survivor! Fun banjo to play, too!
