I'm looking for a cheap hardshell case for the banjo I've almost finished building. It is a Mastertone 5 string style banjo. I really don't want to spend more than $50 or $60, but I also want my banjo to be somewhat protected. It don't need to be one of those fancy waterproof ones, or have a hydrometer or anything like that. Just a basic hardshell case to carry the banjo in and to protect it from getting bumped and stuff.

Musician's Friend. Currently at $80 with free shipping, but they run discounts to around $50 from time to time. Download the Stupid Deal of the Day App. These are good cases for protecting from falling stuff and bumps. They are not road warriors or custom fitted, but I have bought several over the year for local and around the house use.  At the $80 level, I would save up.  Some nicer stuff around low $100 on their site.  The free shipping is huge.  Check Amazon also.  There are sometimes sellers offering these at the lower price.

I didn't realize that the Musician's Gear case had gone up that much in price. The last one I got was $39.99 on sale. Keep an eye on MF and you might catch one on sale. For a cheap case it is as good as anything out there. I would not want one if I were going on tour but it works fine for local use.

For what it's worth, I have bought these in the past to go with the banjos I make so that I could sell the banjo with a hard shell case.

I recently bought the MG case for under $60. I am very pleased with it and my resonator banjo fits perfectly snug inside.

Hunter- from your past posts you seem like a pretty intelligent and talented young person.

If I was you, just to make it complete, do a little internet research and build your own.

If you don’t want to build one, follow the advice above or keep an eye out for a used one.

I have used the Musicians Friend case for 3 years of local gigs, practices, and jam sessions without a problem. My 2-year-old granddaughters uses it as a slide and I don't worry about the banjo. $35 on sale when I got it, but any sale price $50 or less would be good. I also bought one of their foam cases ($60 retail) for another banjo I am building. Much bulkier, but looks good. Free shipping is a good deal on a case.

The Musicians Gear Durafoam banjo case is still only $60 shipped.

I bought one going on 7 years ago. The one I received had a "Guardian" tag. The case overall has held up well. But the hardware and short attachment straps for the shoulder straps gave out in under a year.  The repair at my neighborhood shoe and luggage repair shop cost as much as the case, but it's held up for 6 years.

If you don't need to use your case as a backpack several times a month, you can remove the shoulder straps and not worry about this.

I'm surprised as others to see the price increase on the Musicians Gear hard case. For the longest time it was around $50 with a fairly frequent sale at $39.

Give MusiciansFriend your email and you'll get %-off coupons almost every day. Sometimes for select items, sometimes sitewide.

I have four of the musician friends cases for $40 each free shipping, and one case from Bob Smakula fro $100, not sure of the brand, but he would know. Going forward I’d spend the extra $60

Last summer I looked at an MF case to check the price. Knowing that they drop the price once in awhile, I kept checking back every 2 or 3 days. Shortly thereafter, I got an email from MF offering the case at a reduced price.
