I came across a ten year old post in the archives from RyanHerr that describes an interesting forward roll variant for 2-finger style.

It splits the work evenly between the finger and thumb and it seems to work pretty smoothly.

Thought it was worth bringing to the attention of any 2 finger pickers who might not have seen this before. Could be particularly useful for backup.

That looks like a roll that Doc Watson used quite a bit. You can hear it on the new Doc Watson Gaither Carlton CD from Smithsonian or any of numerous Watson family recordings out there.

Ira Gitlin posted an article about two finger rolls a few years ago but I cannot locate it right now. It can be done.

Hi Bill,

Yes, I came across that. It's referenced here, about a third of the way down the thread.

Why is it called "forward roll"? I would rather call it "drop index". It is just an exaple how you can use the T-I-T-I pattern to sound more interesting.

I was just looking at it from the point of view of someone who might want to emulate a Scruggs style forward roll in 2-finger style.

I suppose anyone can call it whatever they want.

I think it is more a way to get a syncopated rhythm, which you can get with both forward roll and backward roll in Scruggs style. Anyhow, it is a good "lick" (or whatever people will call it).
