Hi All,

I've recently bought my first fretless banjo which I'm hoping to do up (as necessary), but I wondered if anyone had any knowledge on it? I bought it here in Ireland, and the collector said it was likely from either America or England. Its 5 string, but theres a drilled in 6th string in the head (but no corresponding groove).   I wondered if any of you had any idea about where or when it was made, and really anything at all about it.  Why the 6th string in the head but a short 5th string? Etc.  Also any advice for setting it up as its my first :) Thanks all!

Photos of the banjo can be found here: https://www.adverts.ie/banjos/antique-fretless-5-string-banjo/19928303

Post the photos directly to this forum. A lot easier to view and you will get more comments.

I would think it's 1890's English. Originally a 6 string but maybe at some point the nut has been replaced to make it a 5 string ! Looks like someone may have raided the old button tin for inlay practice.
