Mike, I know you'd rather build than buy, but my Cedar Mt "Brainjo-Hobart model" is a very light thin rim with great sound. I just put the strap around my neck, don't even have it over my shoulder.

My Stelling, on the other hand, is a Barbell.

Mike, like Brooks, I have a lighter banjo. Deering Good time Classic Special with a lighter tone ring. I play mostly sitting down but standing isn't much of a burden. A big jump for me after my Asian banjo without a tone ring.

Yes, definitely, especially if I try to stand up and play for any length of time. My Stelling weighs in at a little over 12# and even sitting down, it gets heavy and makes my back hurt. Of course, age wouldn't have anything to do with that, would it? Yes!

Reminds me of  one of Mom's birthdays, We were finishing up decorating the cake, and somebody asked if we had enough candles. One of the neighbor ladies said

"Well, you're only as old as you feel" and Mom (who was not yet SIXTY)  pulled a couple bucks out of the money can, handed it to one of the kids, and said

"Here! Go get another box of candles... maybe two!"
