I am listening to Scruggs backup on I'm Head Over Heels In Love With You and I have a question about a part that I cannot hear.
In the 2nd verse at the words sad and lonely it sounds like he is playing g at either the 12 bar chord or the f position g frets 15-17. Just before this he has backed up the fiddle in what sounds like frets 1-5. It also sounds like by the end of the line in question and a the words thinking of you only, he is back down to the fret 1-5 range. What is he doing here? Can anyone make it out?
Here is the segment starting at the end of the fiddle break.
I could be wrong. Sounds to me like the end of the "Cabin in Caroline" lick at the 12th fret at the time of the word “lonely.” My ear is inferring the beginning of that lick starting at the word "day," but I can't say I really hear it.
Good luck with it!

Bruce, Thanks for listening and for your reply. I had a call from Kevin (warpdrive) Hendrix just a bit ago and he said the same thing. thanks for your time and help.
Not just your ear....it is the Cic lick...but because of the recording, due to probably the use of one mic in those early recordings...we can't hear the start of the lick at the first position, we only hear the final notes up the neck before earl continues the rolling back up between the first and fifth frets
