Russ Carson has posted a backstage video of the Mike Snider String Band playing “Rachael.” Russ, who besides being a crackerjack banjo player,is also a fine photographer and videographer, shot Snider at an angle that clearly shows what he’s doing with his right hand. You can clearly see the thumb come off the 5th to grab melody notes. Fine playing; fine video:

That is amazingly excellent banjo, along with everything else. Thanks for sharing Bill.
I wonder what that banjo is?

Mike is an absolutely great clawhammer player. Russ introduced me to him last May when we were down to visit him and I had a great time swapping some tunes with him, in fact I still have four or five videos on my phone of him! I just saw this video, and haven't confirmed for sure with Russ, but am 99% sure this is a recent banjo that my banjo building friend Dave Dillard built Mike, I think this might be the one made of Osage Orange, sounds great. Mike has a couple of Dave's banjos and frequently plays them on the Opry.  By the way, that's George Gruhn filming in the background, I think he liked it too..

Thanks @gscarson. I just followed that link. Think I drooled a bit. Nice looking banjos.

My guess is that Mike could make anything sound pretty good.

Cheers,

Andy
