I have always stuck with the remo heads but I got one in the other day with an american made banjo co. Head and I have to say, I like the response of it. What is everyone else liking right now?

I normally get Remo from Amazon, or that weather King from stewmac. Haven't had any problems from them.

For oddball, I used a blue tarp once on a diy banjo. Sounds pretty good, just could never get it tight

Renaissance—for synthetic, whether bluegrass or old-time.

I like Steve Huber’s (Remo) heads. Must be the caricature of Steve that gives my banjos that extra punch..... wink

Recently switched to renaissance on 2 of the banjos from the weather kings. So far I'm really liking them.

I use an AMB head on one of my banjos.

No problems.

I've liked the sound of renaissance heads but just can't get past the semi-transparent look of them. I know I'm being dumb, that it should be about the sound not the look, but still, here I am. Do they make one that looks "normal"?

I use an 11" Frosted Weather King, tuned to G#

Maybe someday I'll crank it up a half step to A and listen to how it sounds at that pitch.

Old 5 star, Huber, Renaissance and Remo weather king on my banjos. I also have some unbranded ones from Elderly music I got 10 years ago.

You should try the white Suede heads made by Remo. It's an opaque white head with the same type scuffing that gives Renaissance heads a satin finish. They come in limited sizes and for some reason cost more than other Remo heads. I stock 11" ($34) and 12" (35) in various crown heights.

AMB heads are made by Remo. I have been using them for several years and find them very satisfactory. For odd-sized heads, Bob Smakula can fix you up.

Different banjos, different heads. I'm using "Pre-EPA" Remo (1), Taiwan Remo (2), thinly frosted USA-Remo (3) (all top-frosted) and Remo Fiberskyn (4) these days.

1) Clifford Essex openback "woody";
2) Gibson ball-bearing & Recording King RK-R35;
3) Deering-Vega No. 2, openback Tubaphone;
4) Iida openback with deep rim and 20-hole flathead
tonering.

Used a 5 Star for decades with a (good one) Grover bridge on a Top Tension. Now using Rob Bishline's head which have a similar crack, slightly darker (I like it) tone. Presuming it's a Remo (?) branded for Rob. (If anyone knows).

It's mated with his bridge now, (not sure if he makes his own) also so, keeping in mind that different bridges will effect our head running- pleasing tones too, there ya go. I have the older 5 Star still for a spare.

I've been using either Weatherking or StewMac Remo mediums since 1977

Old 5 Star top frosted on one, Elite faux natural skin on the other, both open backs. I like the tone of both, but I am not expert on banjo tone, being new to the subject.

I replaced the Huber head on my Kalamazoo with a Weatherking, on the advice of a couple other players. The Weatherking sounds better.
