Hello all,

I need 24 2" round nickel plated tension hooks for a banjo project I am working on. Almost everything that I see listed is 2.5" or longer. The only place that I have been able to locate that even lists them as an option is Rickard, but they are out of stock. Any other thoughts on a possible source?

Thank you in advance for any help
Jeff

Contact Companion Banjos, they will get you set up. CompanionBanjo is on the hangout too so you might be able to message them here. I purchased most of the hardware for my build from them, high quality, and nice folks.

I get my hooks and such from Balsam Banjo Works, mainly. I have had good results cutting off the ends of their 2.5" hooks when I needed shorter ones. The question in my mind is how much of the length of your 2" hooks will need to be threaded, and whether you'll have enough threads after cutting off the ends. I put the end I'm cutting off in a vise and cut the hooks with an angle grinder or a hacksaw, then touch up the ends on a sander to make them smoother.

Yep I was going to say you could cut them off and re thread them at the end if needed. It might mess up the plating if you care.

Two and one half inch round hooks from most suppliers will have one inch threaded, so removing 1/2 inch usually presents no issues.

Thank you for all the replies. It looks like I am going to have to cut some down. Probably better that way, I can make them exactly as long as I need them.

Thanks again

When I first read this, I thought you had a big banjo with hooks 2" around.

Has anyone ever used these hooks and nuts?

They look like they could work for what I need.

Several years ago (around 2012 if I had to guess) I bought a set of Golden Gate hooks and nuts, since they were cheaper than Stew-Mac. The nuts were mostly drilled off center and the threading was spotty, some hooks and nuts worked fine and others would stick and squeak even before the nut reached the shoe. It's possible that their quality control has improved since then, but it seems doubtful. I decided I'd rather pay a little more for good hardware, but everyone will have their own priorities about such matters.
