I have a Gold Tone CCIT that I picked up really cheap to get my feet wet. Can anyone recommend a banjo in this general sound category that is a much more upscale sounding and playing version?

Any banjo “upscale” from the CCIT will not be in the same general sound category.  It will have a tone ring, and be more powerful and louder.  Any number of tenor banjos would fill that niche.  Remember that there is no such thing as an “Irish tenor banjo.”  Any tenor banjo can be used for Irish music.  Many Irish tenor players tune their banjos parallel, but lower than, the fiddle—gdae.  But Gerry O’Connor, one of the greatest Irish tenor players, normally plays out of standard tenor tuning—cgda.  So you simply should look for a better tenor banjo than the one you have. Then tunic it as you choose, with appropriate strings.

Thank you. This is very helpful. Can you recommend some makes and models around $1000?
