Just heard the news and so started watching YouTube videos of Mac Benford's excellent playing. What banjo is he playing here? youtu.be/V8Hoq27EfWw
Pretty sure it is an old White Laydie, which is the only banjo I recall seeing him play out in public.
At a banjo camp, about 20 years ago, he said it was a mandolin banjo that he converted to a banjo.
He said he made the neck.
Don’t know what make of mando it was.

I always thought it was a Tubaphone, but I don’t know.
John Bernunzio's column on the Bernunzio web site addresses this topic. He describes meeting Mac twice. In the second, he traded Mac a small tubaphone plus $350 for Mac's Orpheum No. 3 that Mac had played for years.Mac was looking to switch to a smaller, more comfortable banjo.
I believe Mac talked about his banjo on Craig "frailin" Evans' Conversations video. If I recall correctly, he said it was a 10-inch Tubaphone pot from a mandolin-banjo and a short-scale reproduction neck.

Yessir. Mac played a tubaphone with a repo neck when I interviewed him.
Looks like I should have paid closer attention! Thanks for the info, everybody.
