I'm looking for someone to install a 5th string spike in the Brevard/Asheville, NC area. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a deering golden era.

Two answers: (1) If you think you need a 5th string spike to play in A, you can simply turn your fifth string to A, no need for a spike

(2) If you really want one more spike installed I'd suggest that you visit Cedar Mountain Banjos in Mills River (just outside Brevard), I'm reasonably certain they would be willing to install the spikes for you...

If you fret the 5th string at all -- either for notes in melodic style or to add color to up-the-neck chords, then you need a way to capo the string, because tuning it up a whole step to A changes the locations of notes and makes fingering unnecessarily difficult if not impossible.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into them. The thing I don't like about tuning the fifth string up to a is that it throws off the rest of the fret board for that string. Let me know if there are any other companies/people you can think of that I should consider

Call Tim at Cedar Mountain Banjos. As John said, he's just outside of Brevard and a super guy to get to know. He's also one of the best fiddlers I've heard and plays with Unspoken Tradition.

Acoustic Corner in Black Mountain can also do this, if they are closer.
