Recently, I acquired a 1976 Ibanez Artist that came with a 5-Star head. A really thick one. I'm used to Remo heads.

So what kind of sound am I getting with it? I'm just not smart enough to be able to describe it. But I know you folks are. Cheers

I would say more mellow and not as bright as a Remo.

Yes, that's it. I'm used to a brighter sound.

Now how does a thicker Huber head compare to a weatherking?

I'd say similar. I own 2 of those which I got when Steve made a special offer to BHO members sometime back.

Five Star: more bass, less pop.

I always loved to use the five stars. Less overtone more pop. I had one of the Huber vintage heads. It was very good too. I don't remember ever having to retighten it after putting it on.

I have 5 star's on most my banjos. I really like the bass response. Not looking forward to having switch when they bust. I'm thinking I may play around with adding frosting like the old Snuffy heads.

On the advice of a couple of other people, I replaced the Huber head on my Huber Kalamazoo with a WeatherKing. I get better tone now. The Huber heads just don't deliver the punch that the Weatherking does.

I have heard that many Huber owners are replacing the Huber Heads with Weatherkings. And that Steve Huber has been told to use another head.
