I don't know if I am asking this in the right area. If not would someone please tell me the correct area. Below there is an Ebay link that is for a Gibson 5 string banjo.
My question for the experts is is this original and if so what model would it be?
Did Gibson make non mastertone model as well?
And if so , about what years would this banjo be from?
Thanks in advance,
There's a lot about that banjo that don't appear right to me, but I'm no expert.
Gibson did make non-Mastertones, through their entire history.
The peghead looks similar to the RB-1 Gibson made in the 1990s. The Gibson logo cast into the underside of the flange would agree with that model of that time.
However as Banjoman56 said above, there are other things that don't look "quite" right.
Someone who has owned/played/traded a 1990s RB-1 could probably give you the best opinion on this one.
It may have started out as an oxblood Model RB. It looks as if the resonator has been stripped. They were available in a natural finish and the oxblood color. They had that funky hybrid-fiddle/doublecut peghead. The heel cap doesn't look right. I don't recall seeing that on an RB model. The rim should be stamped RB-XXX where the x's are production ranking. This has pre-war length resonator brackets, where I think the RB's had the brackets that slipped on the bottoms of the j-hooks, but I'm not sure about that.
The seller contacted me back and says no serial number on it. So its a pass for me.
Thanks for your help.
