Hello everyone, first time posting on here so forgive me if I am in the wrong area. I am looking at a Gibson RB-500, serial number stamped on the back of the peg head is, 348163. I believe it is a 1965 but not sure. I would like to know how many of these were built, who made the parts for them, ie: tone rings, flanges, wood rim etc. and a price range. On a scale of 1to10, 10 being mint condition I would give this banjo about a 7.5. The finish is good, the gold plating is good but the original tuners have been replaced with Schaller. The owner has the original tuners. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please post plenty of pictures. Plenty of people know about these but we need a little help.
Check this site out. It can give you some ideas. The banjo you are asking about is listed on there.
Supposedly there were 101 RB 500s made between 1964 and 1969.
Hard to tell who made all the parts, but the flange may be Doehler.
If you Google Gibson RB 500 you can see lots of photos of them, and compare and contrast to the one you're looking at.
Here's one that's currentiy in the BanjoHangout Classifieds.........
