Must see flick. Brought back a lot of old memories of racing during that time frame. I had forgotten a lot of the circumstances around LeMans during that period, but the movie was very accurate . Matt Damon did an excellent job portraying Carroll Shelby and Christian Bales was an excellent Ken Miles!

Watched that last week. I was very pleasantly surprised about how historically accurate it was. Lots of great racing scenes and the character development was excellent.

Same here Rick.  I was a huge sports car racing fan at that time and remember a lot about it, but had forgotten or never knew about some of the "in fighting" with Ford.  I knew Shelby was a tough no-nonsense kind of guy and I think he was portrayed very accurately.

I’ve been a motorsports fan since the 1960’s, mostly Formula 1 and sports car/ endurance racing. I also owned a Shelby Mustang and was pretty active in the Shelby Owner’s club so I am familiar with the story behind the movie. It’s great seeing the film’s excellent coverage of an exciting time.

Some of the actual LeMans GT 40’s showed up at many of the club meets. They are amazing machines.

I have yet to see the movie but am looking forward to it. Great stuff, racing has provided so many interesting characters and stories.

OK Al .... I'll try to splain it briefly.

Ford Motor Company was in the doldrums of making pretty much unexciting "mom and pop" cars in the early 60's and Henry Ford II was looking for something, not even particularly racing since they already had cars in NASCAR, to provide a spark for their company.  He wanted someone to come up with a good idea.  One idea was for Ford to buy Ferrari, the well known Italian car company that was about bankrupt, but Ferrari basically used for to get Fiat to pay more for the company, and never intended to do business with Ford.  Enzo Ferrari also insulted  FMC and Mr. Ford personally.  Fiat wound up with 50% of Ferrari.

The best revenge would come on the race track, specxifically Lemans 24 hour race that Ferrari had dominated.  Enter the old chicken farmer/race car driver/car builder Carroll Shelby from Texas.  Together they build the Ford GT 40 and once Carroll convinced Mr. Ford that all of the "red tape" was killing their chances of winning at LeMans, they finall succeeded at winning LeMans.  They won 3 years in a row 1966, 67, and 68 (I think).

ps didn't read your last posts to avoid potential spoilers. Also. Typing on phone so talk like Hulk.

Have a great time with Mrs. W., Michael. If she likes cars she will love this, but will probably like anyway if she is not a big race fan. A little bit of romance ...... kinda.

It is too bad cinemas don't have back seats, and I doubt they have balconies any more. :):) Steve McQueen in "Le Mans" is still No. 1 in my book.

David, it was good, but this one is good too. I also liked Grand Prix with James Garner!

John, you're a geezer if you remember James Garner and the "Rockford Files." So am I.

Great movie. Mrs. Wyozark agrees. I am doubly blessed; she is beautiful and doesn't like chick flicks. . . .

Hi John: MAVERICK. And later, "Great Escape" and "Americanization of Emily." Such a classy guy!

The Ford/Ferrari story is one of the main reasons I took an interest in car performance and design which led to my decision to study Automotive Technology and become a life-long Ford fan.
The rest of my interest in Fords was enhanced by Andy Wyeth's AC Cobras and his KR 500 Mustang.
One of my favorite cars was a '67 Mustang with the venerable 289.
The 260 and 289 were the original GT40 engines and won historic acclaim. The 289 could produce 385 hp,but its life span was in question at hp above 350.
