The one about getting the "thieves" to call police so they wouldn't get arrested reminded me....been there, done that...
The shop teacher [Ted] at a small-town school I worked at had built himself one of those 2-sheet-plywood-hydroplane (?) boats. As a joke, after school one day another teacher and I hoisted it up onto the school [1 stor(e)y, flat roof] and more-or-less forgot about it. Next morning I was across town at the elementary school running a track meet, when one of the staff from that school came over and told me that he'd heard that Ted had reported it to the police as having been stolen. So... in I go... phone the police and give 'em the story. The officer responded with: "I thought we might be getting a call." ...and to show Ted that it was all in good fun, we even helped him get it down!!

After a Toronto City Cycling subcommittee meeting at City Hall, Marsha, Derek, and I were cycling home on the Martin Goodman Trail, along the waterfront. We all had good, bright light systems. As we rolled through Coronation Park, which had no lights, I was in front. A rider materialized out of the darkness in front of me. Fortunately, he missed me. As he passed I remarked, "No lights, no brains!" A few seconds later I heard a loud voice at the behind me. Apparently this guy did a quick 180 and was harassing Derek, who was last in line. As he was threatening Derek, two more riders, side by side and also without lights, came out of the darkness and just missed me. Then I heard the crash at the back. They'd run into the first idiot and, supposedly, all gone down. Marsha called, "Let's get out of here. I'm not stopping for them!" (or words to that effect). I thought, "There is justice in this world!"
My German is a little weak... I think it translates as "...leave me in the car, will ya?" https://www.lachschon.de/item/172208-Wackeldackelwargestern/
