I have repaired a broken neck and a Japanese banjo and am now ready to refinish it. I will paint it with my airbrush but I need advise on what to spray on first? Some form of sealer? How many coats etc etc. Please remember that here in New Zealand we do not have the products nor the range you have there. Brand name are meaningless here.

Can you get aerosol shellac? 2 light coats buff with 0000 steel wool then another coat or 3 with steel wool in between should make an adequate finish. Shellac will adhere to almost any previous finish.

Thanks Rick. I might be able to get some here or at least something similar. Should I use a spirit based paint or an acrylic one underneath?

@rudy

You might consider Rudy's beeswax or carnauba wax method. A search here on BHO should turn up one of his posts.
