That's what I was thinking. It looks more like a pick guard. It seems like it would be pretty tricky to mount.

I have to disagree with it being a pickguard. Both sides are curved, and although I don't use one, I would think one side would be straight to line up with the strings. The curved edge would leave a void and seems like it would be an area where one would "catch" their pick.

Are you sure it is for a banjo?  Could also be an armrest for a mandolin.

That is a banjo pick guard.

That one, or one very similar cropped up here on a thread a few years ago. Have no idea as to where that thread is now.

It went on a smaller head banjo/banjo mandolin.

If I recall correctly. The thread had a photo of it mounted. Looked pretty cool , and also useless.
