Just got a Guardian CG-044-J Vintage hardshell case delivered. Both banjos fit in the case, but I am not able to close the case with either banjo (Gibson ESS, RK-36) and would really have to mash down on the lid to get the latches to close. Goes without saying, I'm sending the case back. Anyone else had this experience with this particular Guardian case?

Both the Guardian and Superior cases vary. I’d suggest going to Gryphon in Palo Alto and try cases until you find one that fits. Cost will be a little higher, but you won’t have to send it back.

Got a new Guardian case three years ago with the same problem. Banjos fit, but closing the top is very tight. It's usable, and I think it's just padding pushing down, but it looks to me like the case has some flaws in the way it was assembled.

Actually heading there tomorrow. The TKL case I wanted they don't have in stock, and no way am I shelling out for a Calton. They did find a NOS/discontinued TKL American Vintage Series USA made case that they said they'd give me a deal on.

I initially ordered the case because it said it was a 7-ply case, while most others are 5-ply, so I thought that would make it a stronger, more rigid case. Not so, and it seems like when you attempt to close the case the part the banjo is seated in (not the lid) bulges out at the sides. Not impressed with this case at all.

Hope it works out for you.  They’ve found me a couple of openback cases for older banjos that just don’t have a match with the standard ones. An aside: my first case from Gryphon was the last Stew-Mac openback model that was made for openbacks, not just extra padding in a resonator case.  That was in 1974, and I still use it.  Don’t remember if it was made by Geib or Lifton.

Just got back from Gryphon. Bought the NOS TKL American Vintage Series case. I guess the AVS cases were made in the USA, and now it makes sense that I couldn't find any information on this case online. They haven't made these cases in years. This one has a quality control tag inside from 2005. Still like new though, hang tags and all.

This case is a tank and super solid. Way sturdier than most other higher end wood hardshell cases, burly latches and a great fit. Light years beyond the Guardian case and also a step up from the original TKL case that came with the Gibson ESS (and that case isn't a bad case).

No. I'm a dealer and if one gave me or a customer that grief, The Music Link would stand behind it even if it was drop-shipped (I don't drop-ship instruments but I will new cases).

I'm glad that Gryphon got you a good deal on that TKL. Support your local dealer.

I used to buy that exact TKL case under a different brand but it's no longer available so no point in going into further detail.
