Are there any music stores in Southern California where I can try a Pisgah, Rickard, or other clawhammer banjos?

McCabes used to carry banjos back when I lived in Santa Monica, you might give them a call and check.
(I was gonna say they're in the phone book, but that would have just given away my age and the time frame of my life in So Cal.
Maybe a trip to Gryphon Music in Palo Alto would be worth it shop.gryphonstrings.com/products?utf8=?&view=&taxonomy=instruments&grid=grid&price_sort=new&filter%5Binstrument%5D=instruments%2FBanjo&filter%5Btaxon_second_children%5D=instruments%2FBanjo%2F5+String&filter%5Btaxon_third_children%5D=instruments%2FBanjo%2F5+String%2FOpen+Back
McCabe’s is really only carrying Gold Tone and Deering these days. Haven’t seen any boutique new instruments in there.
Gryphon indeed carries Pisgah banjos. But Palo Alto is in Northern California, 350+ miles north of Los Angeles
Why not look for one here on BHO?
Hard to try one for sale on BHO. That’s what the OP wants to do.
The Folk Music Center in Claremont might have something interesting. The last time I was in the Fret House in Covina it was pretty much Deering only, but give them a call.
