I've been addicted to this song recently--Chris Coole's Hangman's Reel.
Does anyone know what tuning and banjo he is using (if it is a banjo, I could be mistaken) ? It sounds like the drone string is somewhere around an F#, but it also sounds like everything is down an octave. I absolutely love how dark and warm it sounds.
Chris' tuning appears to be equivalent to double c, but tuned down six semi (half) steps. When I put it on a slow-downer and play along on my cello banjo I come up with c#F#C#F#G#. This comes up to gCGCD if you go up the six semi steps. I'm not sure what banjo he's using. I agree with you that it's very appealing and well-played.
That sure changes the tenor of that tune played down there in that tuning, Quite nice, may have to get the old grain scoop banjo out and try that.
Thanks! Looks like I need to find a cello banjo.
A tackhead or minstrel banjo would work as well. I love my Eric Prust tackhead banjo. I have used it to work out some low-pitched tunes by Rhiannon Giddens.
