New claw-hammer/open back banjo player here. Love the site!
I have a question: I am just acquiring my first open back banjo and I am looking for a reasonably priced hard shell case for it. Anyone have any brands they like or dislike, or any issues they have run into with them. Just trying to make an informed choice.
Thanks all in advance!
One of mine came with a Superior and the other come with a TKL. They're comparably priced and seem like they're of comparable quality. The TKL seems marginally slimmer. It fits the banjo very snugly which is good and bad - it won't move in the case at all but it takes a bit of futzing to drop the banjo in place. Also, the strap that keeps the case from opening all the way flat likes to fold the wrong way when I close the case, so I often have to take care to bend it right. There aren't a lot of other options that I know of until you start getting into fancy custom cases; I'm not sure which I'd choose if I were buying a new one, probably whatever was cheaper or whichever one I could try out at a trustworthy local shop.
I just got this one last week and I like it :
12 Inch Openback Banjo Case
I saw some 12 inch cases and some 11 inch cases- make sure you get the right size.

The Superior 1535, and similar in the model line are the best cases at a reasonable price. I also stock TKL for the few instances that I need a little extra length or the extra width at the peghead for guitar style tuners. TKL cases are more expensive than Superior.
The amazon link provided above is for a Goldengate case. The lids on those cases are flat and do not offer the protection of the Superior 1535

Thanks for the info folks....greatly appreciated!
I have a Guardian (11 inch) that one of the banjo's I bought came in. I like the case. I may have sold the banjo, but I kept the case.
Musicians Friend offers a decent hard shell case. These go on sale for around $50.
They are sized for an 11" resonator banjo but will fit a 12" open back as is, and it is not difficult to pull the lining loose and add some padding for an 11" open back. When I ship a banjo I usually buy one of these cases and ship the banjo inside the case which I also place inside the box it came in.
They aren't as good as a TKL of course, but they are very nice for the price.
