Here in Chesapeake Virginia as Dorian is making its presence known. Winds are getting rather strong which makes the rain (which isn't heavy yet) seem worse than it is. The intracoastal waterway is right behind me so tidal surge is my biggest concern. Im surrounded by lots of tall pine trees so every time a big gust of wind hits boy do they sway. the worst is yet to come, so nothing to do but wait it out, play my banjo, and pray that our area is spared the full force. The path shows it veering away from us once it goes through Hatteras and its a cat 1 now . rain and wind really picking up now as I type this. I feel so bad for those in the Bahamas. We've had many close calls here and Matthew put about 10 inches of water under my house and Isabel knocked a neighbor's tree over and it grazed my house. Fortunately a tall pine deflected it so it didn't smash my roof. just took this pic out my back door.

We're under a tropical storm warning here on Cape Cod. Forecast is for 2-4" of rain - much needed, by the way - and winds to 45 mph. That ain't too bad - I've had much worse winds in winter nor'easters recently.

My dad was born in Galatia Kansas, and his dad was born in Garden City. Some of his relatives settled in Wichita and Topeka. I remember going to Wichita once as a kid to a reunion .

I have family in Freeport, Grand Bahama. They are OK, no water inside that I've heard of.
They are on slightly higher ground with only 3-4 feet of storm surge sea water in their neighborhood.
The damage can't be described without pictures. The airport is totalled.
In Canada right now, they won't get back for many weeks.

Back at ya...I was born in Wichita, but both sides of family came from Old Virginia.  I did my pilgrimage to the home places a few years back.  (wife from Garden City)  Your grandfather would be amazed how much GC has changed.  When I lived there in 70-71 it was 15000 folks, now 40000-50000 folks.  Lots of Bates around here...

ok, back to the hurricane and storm,  again be safe.  We hold our breath during Spring/Early Summer tornado season.  Brad

lol i bet he would! he was born in 1880s. his dad was an okie in the land rush. havent been to kansas since i was teen. after i retire i hope to visit galatia.so far things arent too bad here. high tide will tell. the outer banks are getting it rough . hurricane winds .thats about 2 hours south of me. it will get worse here before it gets better but we wont get it as bad. now lots of streets in norfolk and portsmouth are flooded but not homesthank God. whete i live is very marshy so that kinda acts as a buffer but it can only hold so much until it flows over. power outages all over but not me. i have to go to maryland tomorrow to play a gig but it will be all gone then. we get an occasional tornado but they are nothing like y'all get. there have been a  couple formed from this storm  . didnt mean to post the pic. its my banjo

We have huge naval bases in Norfolk, Pensacola and Mobile, among others, that probably have helicopter assault vessels, hospital ships and transports of large dimensions. Why are we sitting back and letting the little Coast Guard do the heavy lifting when we could quickly mobilize a task force to rescue our neighbors in the Bahamas. NNNNOOOOO, instead we allocate billions of dollars to keep all those Hondurans and Nicaraguans at the border. GOD, what a country!!

I delivered in Jarratt, Virginia last September when Florence was battering NC. They had me wait a day and a half in Emporia to see if I could get a reload in Tar Heel,NC but no dice - it was a mess down there. So I dead-headed up to Toronto.

Still fairly breezy around here, but the skies are starting to clear. Ended up with 1.76" of rain and a top gust around 30 mph. Pretty benign around here.

I remain speechless about the ineptitude (or lack of empathy/caring) in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. Just as in the firearms debate, a step in the right direction comes from private industry and individuals rather than the impotent national government. Cruise ship companies are loading their vessels with emergency supplies and equipment, medical teams and more and in return bringing Bahamian refugees to the safety of Florida (but not to Mar A Largo). How did we become so inured to human suffering on our doorstep?

Hey Bubba, on your map you've amputated Cape Cod. Is this just an oversight or wishful thinking  (political view) ala the White House?

Bubba, I'll take that as a compliment or did we trade Cape Cod for Greenland when I wasn't looking?
