Does anyone know of an app for a smartphone that can identify a tune that is played by title and chords? Thanks.

No one has answered, so I'll give it a try. The question seems to ask us if we know of an app that, if we give the app the title and chords, will "identify" the song. I'm thinking you are asking that if we download a song to this app, it will be able to identify (name) the song and give you the chords as well. Or maybe I'm wrong. I'm thinking that this would take a lot of computer power to make happen (like super computer type power), and I'm not aware of any app that will do that. Your best bet might be to download an audio of the song here on the HO and see if somebody recognizes it. I've seen posts like that and usually somebody is able to identify the song.

There is an app or so that is supposed to be able to give you the chords when you download the tune to the app -- I tried one and it didn't do a very good job. If you know the title of the song, you can search the sites (like guitar sites) that will give you the chords and sometimes some of the melody notes.

There IS an app - I forget its name - that can identify songs. It works by comparing the sound sample to known recordings. It was far from perfect the last time I played with it - for example, it would identify "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith if you input the version from Toys in the Attic. If you input a sample from another band doing it - or even a live recording of Aerosmith doing the song - it would NOT recognize it.

And all it would do is identify the song. Certainly not give you the chords.

Never tried it for any bluegrass tunes but you can ask “Siri” on an I-Phone what song is playing and hold the phone where it can pick up the music being played. It will identify the song but not the chords.
Happy trails,
