Been wanting to try this for awhile now. Keeping with Nylguts, I decided to use the Alabastro normal tension guitar set, using the first string for the fifth, second for the first, etc and finally the low E for the extra bass string. 

 

Having it tuned to dDADF#A, D tunes in double D tuning can easily be played with the added bass without having to change much of the fingering, just an octave below much like a cello banjo.

What a nice deep tone! Very impressive work! I've got a box full of gourds I picked up last year calling to me out in the shop... this is motivating.

Here’s another video of it. Having the sound hole instead of an extra head across the upper bout does allow quite a bit of projection forward, much like a guitar.
