Any opinions? Banjo hasn't sold but it has good parts (Hopkins TR, Factory floor rim, custom neck by a good maker, etc.) so I've been thinking of just selling it by the part.

Let me know your thoughts...

Pictures would be nice. Why do you think it hasn't sold?

I don't see an ad for a banjo attached to your profile so I couldn't give any thoughts.

What are similar parts actually selling for? That’s important to know. The risk: getting stuck with a part you can’t sell at all.

I remember some discussion that parts banjos are hard to sell, you know you put quality components in, but collectively, they don't have any particular reputation like Stelling, Huber, Hatfield etc. A sound clip is the best defense against this perception, I'd say. I've seen two Factory floor rims recently listed at 400, I don't know what Hopkins rings go for, and although there are lot of good necks out there made by complete unknowns or lesser known makers, a Robin Smith, Frank Neat or Huber neck will usually go for about a grand or more, and quickly. Even parting them is a funny thing. I get the impression that a Huber will go for more if it's still all in one piece, but everyone seems to part out old TB-00s at the drop of a hat!

One of my best sounding banjos ever was a parts banjo. I would buy other parts banjos take the parts I want and sell the balance. Usually selling the parts for close to or more than I bought the banjos for. The finish banjo didn't sell for alot compared to branded banjos but it more than held its own with them. It's funny that way.

Hiya, Erik -- Are you talking about the Fitch "Masterclone"? Your ad has expired, so now no one can see it.

For starters, I'd take out the word "Masterclone" -- that doesn't help. Did you put up a sound clip of it?

That’s a nice banjo and a decent price I think. I’ve sold a couple of nice parts banjos and always lost money. If parting out you might wind up with some parts laying around for a long time. I would consider relisting it as a complete banjo.

Yeah, I put it back up. One guy came to play it but ended up buying a Hopkins banjo. We'll see...

Put a new head on it. That old one might sound mighty fine but it kills the look for a newer banjo in a very competitive market.

Joe, the head does show it's been played... :-)

I might do that in a few days altho the one that's on there is an old Pre Epa head.

Thanks!

I understand that many experienced players feel those pre-epa heads are special but you gotta remember that your banjo will be seen by all kinds of pickers and many inexperienced ones who will be more likely to be attracted by condition and price. You’ll probably be farther ahead to sell that old head separately. It is a very nice banjo at a great price.

Well, thanks. I've got a few unmarked up heads that I could put on. I think I'll wait a week to see if there has been any interest; then I will change heads & rewrite the ad.

Thanks for your input...
